Acupuncture for Infertility according to individual patient

Recently, a lady called our office in a very excited tone, last year she had acupuncture treatments for four months in our clinic. She told us she was finally pregnant. She also delivered the baby boy in March of this year. The boy’s weight was 8lbs 3oz. Currently, there are many reports of acupuncture used for infertility treatments, and its successful rate is generally recognized.  

This lady came from Shanghai China, 35-year-old, She had been married for five years and she could not conceive. She was under a lot of pressure. When she came to our clinic with her mother for the first time, she was a little nervous, but requested sincerely for treatment.

She was ready to go to her infertility specialist for “in vitro fertilization” (IVF). After examination, her doctor found although her ​​menstruation was regular, she did not ovulate. Her Follicle Stimulation Hormone (FSH) was high at 15.8 mlu/ml (1.5-10mlu/ml), which was also accompanied by anemia; her Hemoglobin (Hb) was only 9.2g/dl. Her conditions were not suited for IVF.

The doctor refused her requests to undergo IVF, and refers her to our clinic to have acupuncture and Chinese Herbal Medicine treatments. During the four months treatments both of her basic body temperature and ovulation was normal, FSH was coming down 8.7mlu/ml, Hb was 12.7g/dl, all of test report in the normal range. She went to do IVF again and it was a success right away.

According to the different reasons, types and conditions of infertility patients, there are generally three infertility conditions that require treatment.

The first group is Natural pregnancy: It means the lady can get pregnant alone under acupuncture and Chinese Herbal Medicine. They do not need any western medications, IUI and IVF. In fact, in some cases it is not necessary to consider IUI or IVF. For example, a female who is 25-30 years old, with no internal organ diseases, just dysfunctional or FSH imbalance can conceive after Acupuncture and Chinese Herbal Medicine treatments. They have to follow acupuncture doctor’s instruction, such as measuring basic body temperature (BBT) every morning, ovulation testing between two periods, and sexual intercourse during the time of ovulation.

The second group is Prophase treatments of IUI or IVF: it means using acupuncture and Chinese Herbal Medicine treatments 1-3 months before IUI or IVF, and then start to do them. Some cases fail a few times by IVF, but the fertility doctor still considers trying more, most of these cases in results in failure again. It is not only a waste of money and time, but also damages their body. If they accept treatments of acupuncture and Chinese Herbal Medicine, and then they do IVF again, most cases are successful. The success rate will increase by 50% or more. Interestingly, some ladies have been pregnant during the prophase treatments, so they do not need to do any IVF or IUI, so that saves them a lot of money if natural pregnancy is successful.

The third group is Acupuncture treatments combination with IUI or IVF: It means acupuncture treatments used during all procedures of IUI or IVF. Acupuncture can be used in each of the different stages, but the acupuncture points are different. It will greatly increase the success rate of IVF or IUI from 35% to 70% in ages 35-40 years old females.

Of course, each of these cases requires specific analysis in order to create a treatment plan tailored to each individual. Every case requires making specific treatment plans and programs, such as, the important of when to use acupuncture and herbs? How to use them?

According to many years clinical experiences we have invented a set of treatment methods for infertility. For example, acupuncture points selection, herbal formula gradation. Some acupuncture points can be used to balance female hormones system, improve peripheral blood circulation around the uterus, and enhance the function and activity of the egg.

Chinese herbal formula is made according to the cause of diseases. We must clear understand an ovulatory menstruation, higher FSH and lower estrogen due to aging, or suffering from gynecological diseases, such as ovarian cysts, uterine fibroids and endometriosis. All of these diseases need treatment by Chinese Herbal Medicine.  Adding our formula pills “Pregnancy Aid” is as a basic formula to support infertility. It can be used to improve the quality of the eggs and to enhance the blood supply of the uterus.

We have treated 56 cases of infertility patients, 31 cases of pregnancy, 14 cases of natural pregnancy, 17 cases of pregnancy with IVF and other cases. These have all been successful.
